![]() I usually keep one bottle of highlighter infused liquid starch around as well as one plain bottle of it. If you want it to glow in the black light, break open a few highlighters of one color and make highlighter infused sta flow liquid starch by squeezing the highlighter liquid into the sta flow liquid starch and then toss the highlighter cartridges into the bottle. It will be runny at first but firms up with kneading and then refrigeration in a closed ziploc bag. If its ever too stiff add a little liquid starch and knead it for a while. Always refrigerate after use in a closed up ziploc bag. You can find it near spices and food coloring in wal mart. ![]() (I have silly putty thats been in the open air for the last 20 years and its. This stuff dries out, unlike Silly Putty. You cant really shape and mold this stuff, unlike store bought Silly Putty. Which is still pretty cool, but nothing like that of the all powerful Silly Putty. If you want to you can also add mint extract or any food extract flavoring of your choice to make it scented. The gooey paste you make with this is closer to that of gak. Optionally you can add food coloring or liquid watercolors when you first start making it. If its too sticky add a little more sta flo liquid starch. Then knead more when you take it out to play. Then refrigerate overnight in a plastic ziploc bag. ![]() Then refill one of the glue bottles with sta flo liquid starch from wal mart laundry aisle. We made ours purple (1 drop red, 2 drops blue) and turquoise (2 drops green, 2 drops blue).2 bottles of clear elmers school glue(other brands don't work well). Whatever! But if you do: fold over the putty, encasing the drops of food coloring (so your hands don't soak up the dye) and knead until uniform in color. (Or you could just stir/knead it until it thickens.) I threw it in the kitchen aid mixer and turned it on low and within a minute, I heard it thumping and found it ready. I wanted to make enough putty to fill a dozen eggs, so I used. We used to make silly putty by mixing equal parts liquid starch and Elmers glue (the regular not school glue) I believe the starch was StaFlo, but remember it. Use this for your individualized amount, or go with mine: The ratio is 2 parts glue to 1 part Sta Flo. I had boatloads from CVS back-to-school sales to use, but I bet generic brands of school glue would also work. We started with 4 oz of glue and pink food coloring. It will last you a long time!Įlmers School Glue. Description: Mix ordinary white glue (Elmers) and a cross-linking agent: borax (20 MULE TEAM brand from your local grocery store). Homemade Silly Putty Recipe The basic silly putty recipe is 2 parts glue and 1 part liquid starch. Borax is NOT edible and should be used with adult supervision. It runs around $2.50 but you only use a smidgen. We more or less used the Borax recipe found on Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom but you can also make your silly putty with Sta-Flo Liquid Starch like Coffee Cups and Crayons does or with corn starch like Living Well Mom does. Sta-Flo is liquid starch and usually found near the Bleach and Laundry items in the grocery store. I thought I would throw this up here in case anyone needs a silly putty addition to their Easter festivities. Though this putty is a *slightly* different texture and will not pick up images like the commercial stuff, it should be used with care around clothing and carpets just like the storebought kind. Homemade silly putty is super SUPER simple to make and incredibly fun to play with (even for us grown-ups). It was perfect, actually, because the children not only helped MAKE the putty, but got to spend about an hour playing with it before we set it aside for the party (and trust me, they would have played longer had I let them.) ( I labelled the eggs SILLY PUTTY, to be sure children knew not to eat it and to give parents of babies the opportunity to exchange them with older children.) I figured there would be plenty of candy instead those plentiful eggs, so I opted to fill our eggs with homemade silly putty. This weekend we are going to an egg hunt and since there are going to be about a gazillion children there (a good thing), each family is bringing a dozen filled eggs to contribute. The final consistency shouldnt be sticky, stretchy, or rubbery. ![]() Once the slime no longer feels chunky, pull it out of the bowl and knead it. ![]() Squish and mix the slime together using a spoon or gloves, if desired. (Totally whacked out exposure, but I loved Andrews expression. Pour the glue mixture into the first bowl with the borax and water mixture. ![]()
